This morning we loaded up our fur babies, our little love and the jogging stroller and headed down to the beach for a morning jog. I wanted to get an idea of where I currently stood in terms of my jog-walking to better prepare myself for my upcoming 5K’s (all runDisney events, so cool!).
I learned a lot. I learned that I have a long way to go. At the pace I went…if I were in a 5K I would have been picked up for being to slow (Yikes!). To not get picked up during a runDisney 5K you have to keep up a 15 minute mile which should be fairly easy but this new mom is totally out of shape.
Here are a few tips that I personally use that I hope can help some of you out there who are also starting out just like me.
- Don’t be to hard on yourself. While I was jog-walking I kept looking at my phone to see how long it took me and I was beating myself up the entire time. Thankfully, my husband was there to encourage me and to remind me that I was pregnant and gave birth 5 months ago and plus, I was never a runner to begin with!
- Jog/Fast walk/Jog/ Fast walk… I knew I couldn’t jog the entire time- that’s why I’m training! So instead I would rotate jogging a little big then walking. I would find something and tell myself “Okay, I will walk to that point then jog to that point” and kept going on from there.
- Don’t give up! I said at least half a dozen times that I couldn’t do it anymore and that I wanted a break but my husband told me “Walking is your break”Ha! but I listened to him and kept pushing. I have along way to go and I am motivated and I will not give up!
- Keep your eye on the prize. This is an item on my bucket list! To run in a runDisney 5K so your darn right I will not give up and I am keeping my eye on the prize! A shiny medal!
I have a lot of work to do but at least now I know where I stand and what I need to work on. The view we had while jog-walking was so beautiful, I feel so thankful to be back in So-Cal and living so close to the beach. I mean, c’mon…does it get any better then this? I don’t think so!
